What we do:

Dissemination of the project:

1. Training event with teachers from Geo Milev English Language School on the10 and 11th of June.

The aim of the seminar was to inform colleagues of the results of the the two-year project. They got acquainted with the final product – the e-journal. The focus though was on these aspects of the problems that we had worked with the students and that were directly related to our schoolwork and communication with students. For two years students and teachers worked on problems students face today and we found it vital to familiarize all the colleagues with these.  It was important for all the participants of this event  to see the list of problems identified by the students and discuss those that can be remedied with our teachers’ involvement.

In one of the seminars we discussed how drugs and drinking are tackled in our partner countries.  In another seminar we discussed demotivation, which is a top common problem. We had a discussion on the problem of continuous assessment and the stress it causes to our students in Bulgaria and worked on strategies to tackle this issue. We had another seminar in which all the participants in the transnational meetings shared impressions of how teaching happens  in the countries we worked with on the project.

The feedback from this two-day seminar was that all colleagues found it extremely beneficial to their direct contact with students and their teaching methods. There follow the presentations prepared for the seminar by the coordinator of the project.

Presentations:

To finalize the project and disseminate its results we organized YEPS Day at school on the 29 of June. The idea was to get all the students involved in the project in some way. We had a number of activities running simultaneously. The activities organized were meant to encompass most of the problems  we had worked on and popularize the solutions we suggested  to them. The other aim was to disseminate the final product. As most of the results which are part of the e-journal were already known to the students from our school , we focused on the last stage – the posters. We made exhibitions of these posters in the school, in the park round the school  and the city central square so that they could become visible to the public, too.

When working on the project and searching for solutions to the problems, sport emerged as a universal solution to most of the problems. So we organized earlier in April and May a volleyball tournament YEPS- Young Europeans Propose Solutions – Young Europeans Propose Sports. The finals of this tournament were held on that day with many students participating as team players and spectators.

It is a tradition in our school to have a folk dance contest so we organized such on that day. Almost every class participated with representatives. Folk dances offer  solutions to many of the problems – low national esteem, too many young people leaving the country, anxiety about the future, “chalga” culture and the wrong role models it imposes. We believe that if young people love their traditions and cultural heritage it will give them moral strength.

Stress, unhealthy lifestyle, obesity are among the problems we worked on. So as an alternative to these we organized a culinary contest on healthy food. Many students were overenthusiastic to participate and watch this contest, too.

Meanwhile, the final presentations on the problems done in the “ pecha  cucha “format were running on the school multimedia.

All the active participants in the project, those who had produced posters and those participating in the events, were awarded certificates of appreciation and books.

This YEPS Day was extremely successful for the dissemination of the project as every single student of the school was physically and emotionally involved in the activities. It was a day at school that proved the enormous impact of non-formal learning.

2. YEPS Day – 29.06

Fourth transnational meeting of Yeps, held in Lithuania
02-08 October 2015

The final transnational YEPS meeting took place in Lappeenranta, Finland                                                                                                           in the last week of April. All six partner schools came together to work on                                                                                                           the final activities on the project.

The week began with an in-depth presentation of the Finnish education system.                                                                                                                The principal of SAMPO Saimaa Vocational College offered an overview of the school’s programs and emphasized the correlation between the school and the local business. Next on the program was a walk around the facilities of the host school. Fully-fitted labs and comfortable recreational areas stand witness for a practical approach to teaching and respect for student needs.

The following days teams from all partner schools worked on the final product of the project – a portfolio of files presenting the project’s development and activities. An eye-catching design and a variety of activities describe the portfolio best. There are collections of posters, created exclusively for the last meeting; presentations, questionnaires, brochures and videos. The portfolio is now available for download by anyone interested in the project and its aims.

Third transnational meeting of Yeps, held in Lithuania
02-08 October 2015

Our third transnational YEPS meeting in Lithuania from 02.10 till 08.10 is over. Six partner schools from five countries gathered again to  report on the activities carried out at home, exchange views and ideas, update the project plan and decide on future activities. The teams presented current outcomes – presentations, leaflets, brochures, posters, mini –movies, a song – all produced by students who devoted time, effort  and thought to create them.

Our project is mid through and its concept proves to be worthwhile. Working on the common and specific problems young people face today seems to be rewarding . A lot of students are becoming aware of problems, seek for solutions and offer interesting approaches.  Our final product starts taking shape and we all will contribute to filling it with meaningful content and catchy design.

Most of the identified problems appear to be common for young people in all countries. They are complex and range at different levels - school, family, society, and personality. Ineffective education, reversal of values and lack of role models, demotivation and nepotism, negative impact of technologies on school performance, financial problems, violence and aggression, smoking and drinking are among the most widespread ones.

At Sivas meeting each country team showed two role plays (one on common and one on specific problems) prepared and recorded by the school. In the short videos the students from Geo Milev English Language School in Ruse not only presented their view on ineffective education and the issue of time management, but proposed ideas for tackling the problems.

The next milestone in the project implementation is prioritization and more in-depth study of the identified problems at school level with a focus on solutions. This process will integrate various methods and activities, such as group discussions, case study, drawing and collages, role play, survey on a control group of students from other schools. The results from these 3-month activities will be presented at the next working meeting in Lithuania in October 2015

Short-term exchange of groups of students Erasmus+, Young People Propose Solutions, Izmit -

02.03 - 08.03. 2015

The YEPS project brought together people from different countries and cultures, it made us work together, communicate, exchange views and ideas. We found out that our differences were not a gap between us, but the key to expanding our knowledge about  cultures, traditions and  specific habits. We met kind people who became our dearest friends; we discussed our common problems and talked through the different ones. It was really nice to find that we shared common taste in music, and singing became another means of communication. Luckily, we shared mutual interests and ways of enjoying ourselves, which led to the creation of strong friendships. Not only did we practise English and German, but we also tried to learn a few words in Turkish, Finnish and Lithuanian. This experience helped us expand our worldview, open our minds to new ideas and possibilities and break through the cultural barriers.

We learnt a lot about the other country’s educational systems, and were actually surprised by the fact that most of the Turkish students liked sharing their thoughts and feelings with their teachers. Unfortunately, in Bulgaria we (the students) are under a lot of pressure and we don’t feel like sharing our worries with our teachers which somehow complicates the learning process. However, now that we have seen different and, honestly, better ways to communicate, we will definitely try to apply them in our school in Rouse since we are young Europeans who propose solutions.

The meeting began with partners presenting their countries and schools. The next seminar was on presenting the website, designed by Ivona Marinova and Virginia Centeno, students from 12C class at ElS, Ruse. Decisions were taken on the procedure with the logo competition. The coordinator of the project, Il. Hristova, presented the project plan and agreement was reached on dates and responsibilities. On the next day there were seminars on the first stage of the project – “How to make a good questionnaire”. Svetlina Sacheva from 12c , Neli Kasaruva and Mihaela Mihailova from 12G, gave a presentation on the theoretical outlines of how to produce a questionnaire. This presentation was followed by a workshop on drawing up the framework of the inquiry on youth problems. There followed a visit to a volunteer youth organization in Ruse ”Youth Voice”, at which the partners saw a presentation on how to combat unemployment.

The first meeting was important in terms of team building, so the participants spent free time together sightseeing and socializing.  They were given the opportunity to get acquainted with the school management and atmosphere, communicating with teachers and students from the host school. The short stay and bad weather didn’t allow much scope for extensive sightseeing in Ruse, but the one-day trip to Veliko Turnovo was a successful complement to building up lively team spirit.

The meeting ended with positive feedback from all participants. Safe back home, partners will be working on the next stage of the project – carrying out inquiries in their surroundings on problems young people face today and preparing for the next meeting in Turkey – Izmit in March.

The first transnational meeting of YEPS was held in Ruse, from 2nd to 6th,December, with Geo Milev English Language School as a host. The guest partners from Turkey-Sivas, Lithuania, Germany, Finland and Turkey – Izmit, arrived and accommodated on the 2nd ,December. On the next day the school opened its doors to welcome the guests. The project was officially launched by releasing balloons with the national colours of all partners. The guests were greeted by the Prinicipal of the school, Adriana Mitova, by the coordinator, Iliana Hristova and by students singing the hymn of Europe. Media were invited to cover the event.

Geo Milev English Language School launches yet another
„Erasmus+” project

After the successful launch of the first project - KA1 “Educational Mobility”, our school has been approved as a coordinator of another project – KA2 “Strategic Partnerships” among European schools. It’s a huge success as we are among the eight schools in the country. The project has been highly assessed as a concept, strategy and impact of the outcomes on the participants and the community as added value in education.

The project is entitled Young Europeans Propose Solutions- YEPS. The first transnational meeting will be held from 2nd- 6th December in Ruse. Our school will be the host to partners from Germany, Lithuania, Turkey and Finland. Both teachers and students will be working on youth problems seeking possible solutions to them. The aim of this two-year project is to give young people the confidence to tackle their problems more efficiently. Through identifying similarities and differences young Europeans face today, students are expected to build up more active citizenship. Work in an international team will enhance their intercultural competence as well as equip them with a lot of strategies and skills necessary to understand the world they live in and their place in it.
