The Description of The Project
Our involvement in this project proceeds from the beliefs that young people from all cultures face the same fundamental dilemmas in life, that all cultures are valid and worthy of respect and that with more tolerance and sensitivity we could overcome any superficial differences. Differences do exist and are probably wider and deeper than we could imagine, yet our belief is that young people have always succeeded and will continue to succeed in intercultural communication.
We see the role of this project as empowering our students to understand and act on the issues that affect their own lives and other people's. The aim is to form a partnership in an informal learning process and so enable them to realise their potential as individuals and teammates. We intend to apply innovation and exchange good practices in diverse learning based on working life needs.
Young people today face plenty of problems in society and the school is not an oasis. Many problems are hushed up, though, and here we want to speak openly about all of them - substance abuse, growing up too fast, single parents households, lack of parental control or care, spending free time, unhealthy eating habits and disorders, self-esteem issues, apathy, xenophobia, lack of respect for authority and lack of role models. Some important issues are pertaining of school only - bullying, lack of motivation, lack of concentration, dropout, failure in acquiring basic academic and life skills. A major problem is that the school diploma in some cases is becoming a thin defence against incompetence and some students are ill-equipped for the world of work.
Our project aims to help our students to become aware of their problems, to see that they are not alone and find the strength to solve their problems, which is necessary both for their personal development and their future life. It would be a great opportunity for the students to share the problems they have, with the students from other countries. By getting aware of problems young people from other countries have, they will be better equipped to identify and tackle their own.
We see the subject of this project of identifying and solving problems in the context of multicultural Europe. This project is not with a focus on Cultural Studies, but touching on differences is inevitable in an international partnership. In a situation of increased mobility, both in terms of tourism and and the opportunities provided by higher education and the job market, working towards intercultural competence (which is an integral part of any multilateral partnership no matter what its subject matter is ) will make students more adaptable and will develop their ability to communicate successfully in any social context and increase their sense of dignity and self-respect.
They will have the great chance to become more familiar and more open-minded to cultural diversity. We believe it is fundamental to develop knowledge and understanding of different cultures and ways of living, in order to become better aware of what being European citizens means, to promote democratic ideals and to be able to recognize, challenge and fight prejudices and stereotypes, as well as build up respect for differences.
So this two-year project represents one phase of a long-term goal devoted to to the development of cultural teaching and learning. The ultimate objective is to enable students to develop the kind of intercultural competence which will provide them with the means to interpret culture and communicate more successfully in an intercultural context. This objective involves the acquisition of specific intercultural skills and strategies, which will enable students to make better sense of the world they live in and their place in it.
All in all, this partnership is meant to work for open-minded mentality and the necessary skills such as:
-
ability to look at and approach problems as a responsible member of a global society.
-
ability to work with others in a cooperative way
-
ability to take responsibility for one's role/duties within society
-
ability to understand, accept and tolerate cultural differences.
-
capacity to think in a critical and systematic way
-
ability to be sensitive to people's needs and problems
-
willingness to change one's lifestyle and habits in order to contribute better to society
-
ability to participate actively in social life
-
research skills - developing a questionnaire and trialling it
-
confidence in problem solving and making decisions about the future
-
confidence in self- expression
All these skills will be of use in the chosen profession and they will know how to be a successful team member or an individual entrepreneur.
Impact
The project is designed with a view to getting a serious impact on participants and target groups. In the process of learning and getting aware of themselves and their problems participants are expected to develop a set of attitudes and behaviours which will be directly related to what is needed in real life. So their concerns might also be how to make a useful contribution somewhere. We aim at building up a set of the necessary skills for tackling open problems. Basically, we hope the impact to be on enhancing the following skills:
-
ability to work with others in a cooperative way
-
ability to take responsibility for one's role/duties within society
-
ability to understand, accept and tolerate cultural differences
-
capacity to think in a critical and systematic way
-
ability to be sensitive to people's needs and problems
-
willingness to change one's lifestyle and habits in order to contribute better to society
-
ability to participate actively in social life
-
research skills - developing a questionnaire and trialling it
-
confidence in problem solving and making decisions about the future
-
confidence in self- expression
The major impact as a whole is expected to be on improving their communication and language skills and their ICT skills. They are expected also to broaden their awareness of other cultures and boost their self-esteem.
The impact on the teachers participants and participation organisations is expected to be in many aspects as well. The face-to-face and on-line communication with partners will change and enrich our knowledge of other cultures and educational systems. The necessity to work on and present information, reports and electronic products will definitely improve our ICT skills. The subjectmatter of the project and the adjoining activities are bound to enhance our pedagogical skills. The chance to work with students outside the box will inevitably stimulate our motivation to search for innovative and good practices and approaches and inspire us for lifelong learning.
Over two school years project work will be carried on at each partner school, which suggests supplementing and enriching the school curriculum in a creative and effective way. There will be a wide range of students-centred activities from which a school curriculum can only benefit. The dissemination process is bound to affect students who are not directly involved in the project but who will enjoy an atmosphere of openness and empathy. The activities carried out in and outside the school will resound in the classrooms.
Such a project requires support from the school management and staff, so it is expected to enhance synergy withing the participating organisation. Moreover, as it will act in accordance with the European plan for development, it is supposed to contribute to the attainment of its goals.
It is envisaged that the sharing of researched and identified good practice will be useful for all partner schools and other stakeholders.
During the project every participant school will have a stall/corner in their school. We will show what the members of the project countries are doing. We will prepare web sites, posters, leaflets, presentations, short films to inform the school, parents, neighborhood, local newspapers and TV channels. With this we expect to raise public awareness of youth issues and make waves. Hopefully, if we are satisfied with the results of legwork and established contacts on local level, we plan to keep that partnership beyond the project.
Healthy students means healthy future, so when we reach our goals, we will contribute to the European Union with youth who have fighting spirit and competence to tackle problems. The project end product as an e-journal, supplemented with video and multimedia products on common and specific issues, all available electronically on line, can help in creating healthier surroundings across borders and be beneficial to a union in diversity.
We will apply several questionnaires during the project, so we will have the chance to compare the findings and measure impact.
We will update and check the visitors of our website, so we will have the chance to see how many people our project reaches.
Summary
Empathy versus apathy. Synergy versus lethargy. The project intends to develop teenagers' active European citizenship and social inclusion by discovering differences and similarities in problems young people face and need to solve today. The role of this project is to empower students to understand and act on the issues that affect their own lives and other people's. The aim is to form a partnership in an informal learning process and so enable students to realise their potential as individuals and teammates. The project will promote the involvement of teachers and 15-20 aged students as a whole team from 5 different European educational settings. It was prompted by the need to combat low motivation and apathy at school. This is a large project with various partners but the coordinator believes that this will facilitate the broadest range of perspectives, experiences and examples of good practices from different cultural backgrounds. We intend to apply innovation and exchange good practices in diverse learning based on working life needs. The project will be accomplished through activities of searching, studying, comparing, analyzing, problem solving, and creating with the strong involvement of students and teachers. The development of the project will be based on a permanent communication between partners via Internet or face to face in six different international meetings. Considering that the topic of the project is of great interest for partners and a European priority, we believe that it must be disseminated widely from the level of the partners’ institutions to the wide educational community by using various instruments such as mass media, project website and direct meetings. This project will identify effective practice using different evaluation methods for analyzing strengths and weaknesses in order to obtain a good practice partnership. The involved partner members will have precise tasks in accomplishing a user-friendly end products such as an e-journal, a website and multimedia short products made available electronically for the target and for the stakeholders in different European countries as a real added value for education.
